Both men enter the tomb (20:5–8), but only the response of the beloved disciple is recorded. Verse 8 says that he “saw and believed.” His faith is only incipient faith, however, because the story goes on to say that they did not yet know about the resurrection (20:9). The male disciples, like Mary, could find no words out of their prior experiences to describe the empty tomb.
